Summary

Air Buster feels like a love letter to classic horizontal shooters such as R‑Type and Gradius, but it adds a rare simultaneous two‑player mode that lets friends dogfight the mechanical fortress together. The game’s six scrolling stages are peppered with a surprisingly deep arsenal: seven weapon types range from a Striker that spawns vertical Options to a Reverse shot that fires diagonal blasts backward, plus homing missiles, six‑way spreads and a protective Border that shields the ship’s front. Power‑ups boost the standard shot while dollar‑sign bonuses sprinkle extra points throughout the action. Visually, the Genesis port expands the arcade’s parallax layers to full screen, delivering sharper sprites and richer sound effects that earned praise from magazines despite the occasional complaint about the low difficulty. Critics consistently highlighted the crisp graphics, solid audio and smooth playability, cementing Air Buster’s reputation as a standout shooter on the Mega Drive.
