Summary
Aa Harimanada is Sega’s 1993 attempt to bring the quirky sumo‑wrestling world of the TV Tokyo anime to the Mega Drive. The game masquerades as a standard fighting title, but every move is framed as a sumo bout, and a surprisingly deep set of button combinations lets you execute a variety of throws and holds. A password system lets you pick up where you left off, and a two‑player versus mode offers a quick way to pit friends against each other in over‑the‑top sumo showdowns. Critics, however, were harsh: Sega Pro gave it a 59 / 100, calling out sluggish responsiveness and a lack of engaging gameplay. In short, while the concept is charming for fans of the series, the execution left most players feeling the match was more a novelty than a lasting challenge.
Storyline
Aa Harimanada (sometimes referred to simply as Aa! Harimanada) drops players into the high‑stakes world of professional sumo. The story kicks off on the first day of the September Professional Sumo Tournament, where the newly promoted yokozuna Harimanada steps into the dohyo wearing an eerie mask that shocks the crowd.
Harimanada makes a bold proclamation: he will shatter Futabayama’s legendary streak of 69 consecutive victories. He adds a dramatic twist, vowing to retire on the spot if he ever loses a match.
His challenge provokes the wrath of the Japan Sumo Association and instantly turns every makuuchi‑rank wrestler into his enemy, setting the stage for a tense, high‑pressure competition.
