Summary
I’m still amazed that “Who Shot Johnny Rock?” packs a full‑motion video gangster noir into a light‑gun shooter. The 1920s‑style crime tale is driven by live actors and forces you to wield a Tommy gun that never reloads—though the ammo’s limited, so you’re constantly buying more with the cash you earn. Each time you get hit, you lose money; run out and it’s game over, while shooting an innocent drags you into pricey funeral fees.
What’s wild is that the murderer is chosen at random from four possible suspects, so the final showdown in Rock’s mansion never feels the same twice. The Sega CD version even lets you hook up a Konami Justifier, but reviewers panned the graphics and clunky cursor, awarding it low scores. The title first showed up at the 1991 Las Vegas Amusement Expo as “Who Killed Johnny Rock?” and later resurfaced with an upgraded 2003 re‑release from Digital Leisure.
Storyline
Who Shot Johnny Rock? drops you into a stylized Hollywood version of 1930s Chicago, where you play a private detective hired to uncover the killer of nightclub singer Johnny Rock. Your investigation forces you to hunt down suspects, shoot hostile goons, and interrogate anyone who might know the truth. The case leads you through four distinct gangs, each headed by a uniquely named boss: Measles, a munition‑factory owner; Mumps, a bar owner; Pox, a mechanic; and Lockjaw Lil, a casino owner, all of whom had connections to the victim.
The game’s environments mirror the gritty underworld—an abandoned warehouse, a smoky pool hall, a cluttered garage, and a flashy casino—each serving as a backdrop for clues and confrontations. By piecing together evidence and surviving the shoot‑outs, you aim to finally identify and confront Johnny Rock’s murderer.
