Summary
When I first booted up The Secret of Monkey Island on my Sega CD, the moment the CD‑ROM kicked in, the game’s whimsical score swelled in crystal‑clear CD‑audio. Michael Land’s original MIDI themes, now re‑recorded and layered with richer instrumentation, give the pirate towns and secret caves an unexpected depth that floppy disks never delivered. The point‑and‑click adventure still lets you steer Guybrush Threepwood through ridiculous insults and clever puzzles, but the full‑colour palette and smoother scrolling make each swash‑buckling duel feel like a slice of Errol‑Flynn cinema. The dialogue trees, originally improvised by Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman, sparkle even louder against the richer voice‑over possibilities, though the Sega CD kept the original text‑only banter for purists. Exploring the stone monkey and dodging LeChuck’s cursed brew feels fresh when every swash‑buckling laugh is wrapped in high‑fidelity sound, turning a classic adventure into a surprisingly immersive retro road trip.
Storyline
In the Sega CD version of The Secret of Monkey Island, eager rookie pirate Guybrush Threepwood docks on Melee Island and is challenged by three "important looking pirates" in the SCUMM Bar. He must best the sword‑master Carla, locate a buried treasure and pilfer a prized idol from Governor Elaine Marley’s mansion. During a botched break‑in he meets Elaine and they fall for each other, just as the ghost pirate LeChuck swoops in, kidnaps her, and retreats to his hideout on Monkey Island.
Guybrush buys a used ship from Stan, who warns that a crew of four is needed. He recruits Carla, the hook‑handed Meathook, and prisoner Otis, then sails to rescue Elaine. On Monkey Island he resolves a cannibal‑vs‑Herman Toothrot dispute and obtains a voodoo‑root elixir that can destroy ghosts.
Back on LeChuck’s ship the elixir is lost, so Guybrush substitutes a bottle of root beer, sprays the ghost, and watches LeChuck explode in a fireworks display. Elaine is saved and the two share a romantic moment as the island celebrates.
