Summary

Sonic CD (often just called Sonic CD) turns the classic side‑scrolling dash into a time‑bending puzzle. By hitting the pastel “past” or “future” signs, I can flip each zone between three eras, and the future isn’t set in stone – destroy a hidden transporter in the past and the bleak, robot‑filled future brightens into a lush, enemy‑light version. Converting every zone or gathering all seven Time Stones unlocks the game’s best ending, rewarding careful exploration as much as speed.

The CD format shines through animated cutscenes from Studio Junio and a soundtrack that swaps house‑infused techno for a completely different North‑American mix. Special UFO‑shooting stages hand out the Time Stones, while the D.A. Garden lets me replay completed zone music, and Visual Mode showcases the opening and closing movies. Even the backup memory lets me save progress, a rare luxury for a 1990s platformer.

Storyline

In Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog and his self‑proclaimed girlfriend Amy Rose travel to the mysterious Never Lake, where the extraterrestrial Little Planet appears during the last month of each year. Dr. Robotnik has chained the planet to a mountain and is converting it into a massive metal fortress, using seven hidden Time Stones—diamonds that control the flow of time—to power his scheme. After Metal Sonic kidnaps Amy at Collision Chaos, Sonic pursues the rogue robot through Stardust Speedway, rescues Amy, and ultimately confronts Robotnik in his lair, Metallic Madness. The game offers two possible conclusions: if the player gathers all Time Stones and secures a good future in each zone, Little Planet thanks Sonic with a shower of stars and departs peacefully; otherwise, Robotnik reclaims the planet with the stones, prompting a replay to achieve the better ending.
