Summary

Snatcher on the Sega CD feels like stepping into a neon‑lit noir novel that Hideo Kojima wrote for a console that could barely handle 64 colors. The developers pushed the hardware to show 112 hues and swapped palettes on the fly, while also trimming a few risqué details—breasts were covered, a shower was blurred, and a teenage character was bumped up to eighteen. Gameplay stays true to the original’s menu‑driven style: you choose Look, Investigate, Talk, Ask or Move, examine items in Gillian Seed’s inventory, and even show them to NPCs for clues. When the story forces you into combat, a 3×3 grid turns each encounter into a quick‑draw puzzle, and the Junker’s Eyes trainer lets you hone your aim. The CD version adds extra forks, a mystery‑solving grade, and two voice‑acted scenes—a comic‑style prologue and a bittersweet ending with Mika and Katrina—that weren’t in the earlier releases. Despite glowing reviews, the North American launch in early 1995 sold only a few thousand copies, making it the lone Western glimpse of this cyber‑future thriller.

Storyline

Snatcher takes place in the mid‑21st century after a biological weapon called Lucifer‑Alpha devastated the world, killing 80% of the Eurasian population and half of humanity overall. The fallout created an uninhabitable zone for a decade before the agent mutated into a non‑lethal form, an event later known as the Catastrophe. Fifty years later, humanoid robots called Snatchers begin appearing on the artificial island of Neo Kobe City, killing humans and taking their places, while the player assumes the role of amnesiac agent Gillian Seed, a member of the anti‑Snatcher task force JUNKER.

In Act 1, Gillian meets JUNKER members Mika Slayton and Chief Benson Cunningham and receives the robot navigator Metal Gear Mk. II from engineer Harry Benson. A distress call leads him to the beheaded body of fellow agent Jean‑Jack Gibson, and he narrowly escapes a factory explosion. With help from his daughter Katrina and informant "Napoleon," he identifies suspects and is rescued by Random Hajile, a Snatcher bounty hunter.

Act 2 sees Random join the investigation of a suspicious hospital, where a hidden basement reveals skeletons of Snatcher victims and confirms Chief Cunningham as a Snatcher. After a Snatcher assault, Random distracts the enemies, allowing Gillian and Metal Gear to flee. Back at JUNKER, Harry is mortally wounded by the Chief and dies, and Gillian kills the Chief after Mika is taken hostage. Jamie then contacts Gillian, saying she has regained her memories and is being held in the "Kremlin."

In Act 3, Gillian and Metal Gear travel to an abandoned church resembling the Kremlin, where they find Jamie captive by scientist Elijah Modnar. Elijah reveals that the Soviet Union created Snatchers during the Cold War, and that Gillian, a former CIA operative, married Jamie and fathered Harry before being placed in cryogenic sleep when Lucifer‑Alpha was released. Random, an anti‑Snatcher built from Elijah’s father’s memories, reactivates and holds Elijah at bay while Gillian and Jamie escape. Metal Gear fires an orbital weapon that destroys the Snatcher base, killing Elijah and Random. With knowledge of a larger Snatcher factory in Moscow, Gillian prepares to launch a new mission to eradicate the menace and reunite with Jamie.
