Summary

Shining Force CD gathers the two Game Gear Gaiden adventures into one Sega CD release, preserving the franchise’s signature turn‑based tactics and pixel‑perfect character art. The package is divided into four “Books”: the first two replay the original Gaiden stories, while Books 3 and 4 present fresh scenarios that continue the plot. Battles are punctuated by brief cutscenes, and you can save, promote, trade gear and resurrect allies between encounters. Because the console’s internal memory can’t store all data, a backup‑RAM cart is required to transfer character stats from the early Books into the later ones.

Initially launched in Japan in mid‑1994, the game later reached North America and Europe despite early statements to the contrary. Critics lauded the deep strategy and expressive animations, though some felt it barely altered the core mechanics of its predecessors. Next Generation rated it four‑stars, calling it essential for Sega CD owners, and Retro Gamer listed it among the top ten Mega CD titles. A 2022 re‑release on the Sega Genesis Mini 2 re‑ignited interest in this cult classic.

Storyline

Shining Force CD (often just called Shining Force CD) opens with the Cypress ambassador Woldol delivering a cursed jeweled box to Guardiana’s Queen Anri, putting her into a magical sleep. The player, as visitor Nick, is chosen to lead Guardiana’s Shining Force, rescues captured soldiers, and discovers he is the late king’s son. After storming Cypress’s castle, Nick defeats Woldol with the royal Sword of Hajya, though he is left with a stone‑cursed arm.

In Book 2 the focus shifts to Deanna, a wounded youth rescued by Cypress soldiers Natasha and Dawn. After the Sword of Hajya is stolen, a small team chases the thief to Emild, recovers the blade, and learns Prince Nick has been captured. The mysterious benefactor aiding them turns out to be General Hindel, who betrays Iom. A final showdown sees Warderer sacrifice himself to summon the evil god Iom, but Nick’s forces defeat the deity and send it back to Hades.

Book 3 finds Nick’s coronation interrupted by the witch Dava, who kidnaps Queen Anri. To prove his worth, Nick must rally the Cypress army and Guardiana allies to rescue the queen.

In Book 4, a museum visit goes awry when the exhibits of Nick’s greatest foes magically come to life, setting the stage for a new battle.
