Summary

The Sega Classics 4‑in‑1 showed up in 1992 as a $59.99 pack‑in for the Multi‑Mega/CDX, and you could also find it tacked onto a Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective CD or even the Sega CD hardware itself. It bundles four familiar Mega Drive titles—Columns, Golden Axe, The Revenge of Shinobi and Streets of Rage—each lifted straight from their cartridge versions but given a modest CD‑level polish.

Revenge of Shinobi appears as revision 1.02, stripping out the Godzilla and Batman bosses and leaving only the Spider‑Man showdown, while Golden Axe is the lone game (aside from Columns’ title theme) to sport true CD‑audio from the arcade soundtrack and a one‑player‑only mode with higher‑fidelity voice samples. Streets of Rage keeps its western name even in the Japanese release and sounds almost identical to the Genesis version, save for crisper dialogue.

Two distinct compilations exist: the original 4‑in‑1 for North America and Japan, and a later 5‑in‑1 European/North‑American bundle that tacks on Super Monaco GP. The later set arrived with Ecco the Dolphin, while the earlier one shared its box with Sherlock Holmes. Across both, digitised speech was upgraded, Golden Axe’s opening music was re‑instrumented, and Super Monaco GP gained extra drum tracks, meaning only a tiny slice of the disc actually uses the CD’s audio capabilities.
