Summary

Road Rash on the Sega CD feels like a gritty bridge between the 3DO original and the later Genesis sequel, and it’s the only version that actually lets you race to the beat of licensed tracks. You start with a modest cash stash, pick a bike that matches your weight‑class preferences—lighter bikes zip faster, heavier ones pack a punch—and then fight your way through five California‑themed levels, each with five races. The combat is hands‑on: you can punch, backhand, kick, or snatch clubs and chains from rivals, and the opponent’s stamina meter even changes color to hint at how aggressive they’ll get. Crashing isn’t just a visual setback; it drains both your rider’s stamina and the bike’s damage meter, and if you can’t cover the repair bill or a police fine, the game ends early. Between races you can haggle in the shop for upgrades or nitrous boosts, and the two‑player mode pops up intermittently for a quick showdown. While the graphics don’t quite match the 3DO’s polish, the licensed soundtrack and the blend of racing and brawling give the Sega CD edition its own distinct flavor.
