Summary
Lunar: The Silver Star (often just called Lunar) showed what a CD‑ROM could do on the Sega CD. The game rolls out full‑motion video and CD‑quality soundtrack, with over fifteen minutes of spoken dialogue and voice acting for five key characters. Working Designs’ North‑American localisation is famous for its tongue‑in‑cheek script, peppered with American pop‑culture jokes, commercials and RPG clichés, all squeezed into a four‑megabyte English script finished in only eight weeks.
Battles play out on a turn‑based grid where speed dictates order, and the party can move, stand firm or flee. Random monster encounters pop up as you wander fields, towns and dungeons, and experience points let you level up weapons and equipment. Saves are written to the Sega CD’s internal RAM or a plug‑in RAM cartridge, a rarity that added to its charm.
Storyline
Lunar: The Silver Star follows Alex, a 15‑year‑old from the mountain town of Burg who dreams of becoming a Dragonmaster like the legendary Dyne. After his friends Luna, Ramus and the winged Nall retrieve a diamond from the Dragon’s Cave, the ancient dragon Quark urges Alex to complete the trials of the four elemental dragons. Along the journey he meets allies such as the mayor Mel, the sorcerer‑turned‑villain Ghaleon (the Magic Emperor), the bandit Kyle and the priestess‑in‑training Jessica.
Each dragon grants Alex a fragment of power: the Red Dragon’s spirit, the Blue Dragon’s song, and the furious Black Dragon that Ghaleon has corrupted. With these blessings the party assaults Ghaleon’s mobile fortress, the Grindery, which devastates the city of Vane and uses Luna, who is revealed to be the goddess Althena under mind control. Alex obtains Althena’s Sword, defeats Xenobia and the Magic Emperor, and finally reaches Luna.
In the climax Alex plays his harp while climbing a lightning‑filled path, allowing Luna’s true personality to return. She awakens in his arms as the goddess is freed, and the friends celebrate the world’s salvation. The story blends Russian‑inspired northern scenery, medieval European towns, and a classic hero’s quest for destiny.
