Summary
Keio Flying Squadron puts you in the shoes of Rami Nanahikari, who zips across the skies perched on Spot, a laid‑back dragon that shoots fireballs. Two smaller dragon companions, called Spot Jrs., pop out to fire weaker projectiles and can be sacrificed in a Kamikaze attack for a burst of extra damage before re‑appearing. Power‑up items boost Spot’s flame into six levels, while sub‑weapons—ground bombs, throwing stars or homing Spot Jrs.—add variety to the vertical onslaught.
The CD‑ROM shines in its animated cut‑scenes, courtesy of Studio Pierrot, and a soundtrack by Tsukasa Tawada that blends Japanese‑drum tones with synth‑rich FM/PCM layers. Voice work was handled by both Japanese and English casts, and a hidden LCD‑style minigame (“LSI Game Neko”) rewards curious players. A demo first surfaced in a 1994 issue of Sega Pro, and Retro Gamer later hailed the title as a top‑ten Mega‑CD classic, noting its humor, vibrant graphics, and clever use of the CD platform.
Storyline
Keio Flying Squadron drops you into the late Keiō era (1865‑1868) of the Tokugawa shogunate. Rami Nanahikari, a cheeky girl raised by her grandparents as the next Guardian of the Key to the secret treasure called the "Ark," discovers the key missing after a quick stop at a local convenience store. Unaware of the treasure’s true value and with her grandmother unable to recall what the Key unlocks, Rami dons her bunny‑girl outfit and hops on her loyal dragon, Spot, to hunt it down.
Along the way she battles an odd mix of foes—tanuki, dogs, cats, monkeys, the Seven Lucky Gods, U.S. troops, the Russian Army, and a serpentine dragon—before finally confronting Dr. Pon Eho, a hyper‑intelligent tanuki (IQ 1400) who pilots the ship that stole the Key.
