Summary
I remember when Final Fight CD landed on the Sega CD – the game kept the full roster of Haggar, Cody, and Guy and even preserved the two‑player action the Super NES cuts had lost. The CD upgrade adds full‑voice opening and ending lines plus an arranged soundtrack that sounds richer than the cartridge version, while the music still cranks the classic arcade beats.
The stage select is the same six‑area grind through Metro, where you can swing pipes, knives or swords as you pummel street thugs. A new time‑attack mode gives you a single‑player sprint to post the best scores, and the game still lets you swap characters on the fly. Weapon variety and the option for a buddy‑fight make the experience feel almost arcade‑perfect.
However, the hardware limits cut a few corners: the color palette is slimmer and background detail sparser, and fewer enemies appear on screen than the arcade original. Cody’s and Guy’s combo attacks lag a bit compared to the arcade, and the English localization censors some risqué art – Poison and Roxy keep their roles but their outfits are less revealing.
Storyline
Final Fight CD takes place in Metro City, a fictional Atlantic‑coast metropolis modeled after New York. In the 1990s (or 1989 in the Japanese version) the city’s crime rate had spiraled out of control until pro‑wrestler‑turned‑mayor Mike Haggar was elected and dramatically cleaned up the streets. Haggar’s crackdown drove the crime level to its lowest point, but the Mad Gear Gang, led by the corrupt businessman Belger, refused to surrender.
Determined to keep power, Belger’s gang bribed Haggar, who refused, and then kidnapped his daughter Jessica to sow panic. Enraged, Haggar enlists the help of Cody Travers, Jessica’s boyfriend and a seasoned fighter, and Guy, a ninja‑in‑training and Cody’s rival‑friend. The trio sets out to crush Mad Gear and rescue Jessica, battling through the city’s underworld.
