Summary

Fatal Fury Special (known in Japan as Garō Densetsu Special) builds on its predecessor with a noticeably faster pace and a brand‑new combo system that lets you chain attacks and enjoy a brief invincibility window after each hit. The game also expands the line‑move mechanics, letting Light Punch or Light Kick trigger Low Line Jump Attacks when the opponent is on the opposite plane, adding a fresh tactical layer to the classic pseudo‑3D movement.

The roster swells to fifteen fighters: the eight regulars from the earlier title, the returning veterans Tung Fu Rue, Duck King and Geese Howard, plus the four former AI‑only bosses—Billy Kane, Axel Hawk, Laurence Blood and Wolfgang Krauser—now fully playable. A hidden cameo from Ryo Sakazaki of Art of Fighting appears at the end of single‑player mode, a crossover that later inspired SNK’s King of Fighters series.

The Sega CD port faithfully reproduces the arcade’s characters, moves and soundtrack, though it trims some animation frames and background details. GamePro slammed the conversion as a disappointing downgrade, while Electronic Gaming Monthly praised its overall fidelity, noting weak sound effects but awarding a solid 7.375/10 score.
