Summary
Ecco: The Tides of Time (often called Ecco 2) builds on the original’s underwater adventure by adding a behind‑the‑dolphin camera angle that makes the world feel more immersive. The core mechanics stay familiar – you ram enemies, use sonar to map the area and communicate with other cetaceans, and you must surface for air – but new puzzles force you to follow dolphin mazes or hunt down the Asterite’s missing globes. Two fresh power‑ups spice things up: the Pulsar lets you unleash a multi‑directional sonar blast, while the Metasphere temporarily transforms Ecco into a seagull, jellyfish, shark, school of fish or even a Vortex drone, each tailored to a specific level.
The Sega CD version shines with Spencer Nilsen’s alternate soundtrack, later collected on the "Songs of Time" album and even performed at the BBC Proms in 2022. Enhanced graphics include pseudo‑3D ring‑swimming sections where missing too many rings forces a restart, and reviewers praised the richer visuals and crystal‑clear sound effects. The exclusive History Glyphs add a layer of lore that deepens the experience.
Critics gave the CD release solid marks – GamePro called it an "excellent sequel" and Next Generation highlighted its charm, while Electronic Gaming Monthly noted the beautiful music and sound design. Though a third installment was planned, it never materialized, leading to the spin‑off Ecco Jr. and later a Dreamcast reboot. In 2026 the original team’s studio announced a compilation, "Ecco the Dolphin: Complete," promising both nostalgia and new content for fans of this aquatic classic.
Storyline
Ecco: The Tides of Time picks up after the dolphin hero saved his pod and the Earth from the Vortex in the original game. Back in his peaceful waters, a cave‑collapse earthquake strips Ecco of the Asterite’s powers and a mysterious dolphin named Trellia, his far‑future descendant, drags him forward in time. In this far‑future ocean the water itself has a mind, waterways stretch through the sky, and dolphins have evolved to fly using helium sacs and telekinesis. The Asterite, now a dying fragment, reveals that the Vortex Queen survived, killed the ancient crystal and split the timeline into a bright world of flying dolphins and a bleak, machine‑filled future ruled by the Vortex.
Returning to his own era, Ecco hunts scattered Asterite globes, first in the Moray Abyss and later in the stripped‑bare Lunar Bay. Vortex drones ambush him, dragging him into the dark future where the planet is a lifeless network of water tubes and artificial gravity. He destroys the Globe Holder, recovers the final globes and is warped back.
With the Asterite whole again, Ecco regains his powers and summons his pod for a massive showdown in Lunar Bay. After infiltrating the Vortex’s New Machine, he confronts and seemingly destroys the Vortex Queen.
The Asterite then instructs Ecco to travel to Atlantis and destroy the Atlantean Time Machine to stop the timeline from ever splitting again. In the sunken city he discovers the Queen alive as a larva; they race to the machine, and the Queen is sent to the Prehistoric Era where the Vortex becomes part of Earth’s arthropod ecosystem. Ecco chooses to use the Time Machine himself, vanishing into an unknown era.
