Summary
The Sega CD version of Dragon’s Lair (often just called "Dragon’s Lair") slaps Don Bluth’s full‑motion cartoon onto a CD, delivering surprisingly crisp 720p‑style video for a 1993 launch. Because the game runs on an on‑rails “quick‑time” engine, I’m forced to hit the right direction or button at a split‑second’s notice, and every mistake throws me into a new branch of the animated nightmare. ReadySoft managed to cram the original LaserDisc footage onto CD‑ROM, but the grainy video and demanding timing still make the experience feel like a delicate dance with the dragon’s fire. Critics were split: GameFan gave it 297/400, GamePro praised its benchmark status despite the timing hassle, and Electronic Gaming Monthly warned that pinpoint accuracy is a must, handing it a modest 6.2/10. Even decades later, the title stands as a nostalgic showcase of what early FMV games could achieve on home hardware.
Storyline
In Dragon's Lair you become Dirk the Daring, a valiant but often clumsy knight on a fantasy quest. The goal is to rescue Princess Daphne, who’s been locked inside the foul wizard Mordroc’s castle by the evil dragon Singe. The attract mode even teases the adventure: “you become a valiant knight, on a quest to rescue the fair princess from the clutches of an evil dragon.”
Dirk must fight his way through Mordroc’s enchanted stronghold, dodging treacherous monsters and absurd obstacles. The castle’s mysterious caverns below add another layer of danger as he battles the forces that guard the dragon’s lair.
The game’s tone mixes comedy with peril, featuring bizarre creatures and humorous death scenes that highlight Dirk’s reluctant, easily‑scared nature.
