Summary

Dark Wizard invites players into a sprawling kingdom of Cheshire, where a shattered monarchy leaves the realm vulnerable to the nefarious wizard Velonese. The game’s battles unfold on hex‑based maps, demanding turn‑based tactical decisions as you command a variety of magic‑wielding heroes and recruitable troops.

Beyond the frontlines, towns and villages hide a wealth of side content, rewarding exploration with upgrades, lore, and strategic options. The Sega CD shines thanks to one of the console’s earliest fully orchestrated soundtracks, delivering rich, cinematic music that still feels immersive today.

Critics praised Dark Wizard’s depth: GamePro called it “essential” for its substance and nuance, while Sega Visions likened the experience to an entire galaxy of role‑playing depth, hinting at well over 300 hours of possible play. Even reviewers who adored the cinematics noted the game’s balance of story, tactical combat, and replay value, cementing its reputation as a standout CD‑ROM RPG.

Storyline

Three centuries before the opening, Cheshire’s high priest attempts to upset the balance of good and evil by summoning the dark god Arliman. The goddess of light, Sabrina, intervenes, granting great power to two kingdom leaders who defeat the priest. Together with the king’s high wizard, Gilliam, they trap Arliman inside a magical jewel. One of the heroes, Armer, ascends the throne, founding a bloodline that leads to King Armer VIII at the start of Dark Wizard.

Gilliam’s top apprentice, Velonese, is caught using forbidden magic. As punishment, an immortality spell binds him to guard the jewel on the Island of Raven. The jewel’s lingering essence corrupts him, turning Velonese into the Dark Wizard. Consumed by hatred for Gilliam and Cheshire, he summons four demon generals to seize the kingdom while seeking Arliman’s release.

Players choose one of four protagonists: Prince Armer IX, cavalry leader Robin, sorceress Krystal, or vampire Amon. Each hero follows a storyline, but all begin with the king’s death and the new ruler’s oath to reclaim the land. The narratives are not linked; Armer IX appears only as a cameo in the other scenarios. The ultimate goal is to defeat the Dark Wizard, stop the demon invasion, and prevent Arliman’s resurrection.
