Summary
Bram Stoker's Dracula on the Sega CD feels like a time‑capsule of early ’90s multimedia ambition. The game drops you into a side‑scrolling adventure as Jonathan Harker, marching through seven film‑inspired stages that are rendered with digitized backgrounds and actors—a visual style that was cutting‑edge for its day. Before each level, a brief voice briefing sets the mood, and the FMV cut‑scenes are lifted straight from the movie, giving the experience a surprisingly cinematic flavor. Psygnosis handled the development under Sony Imagesoft’s green‑light, aiming to blend arcade action with movie tie‑in flair. Critics were split: AllGame gave it a modest 2.5 / 5, while Electronic Gaming Monthly’s scores hovered around the mid‑range, and Mean Machines Sega landed it at 51 / 100, pointing out choppy character movement and pixelated video as the main drawbacks. Despite those flaws, the Sega CD version remains a quirky footnote for retro fans who love the blend of gameplay and full‑motion movie moments.
Storyline
Bram Stoker's Dracula on the Sega CD follows the lawyer Jonathan Harker after he is seized by Count Dracula. Harker manages to break free and embarks on a relentless chase that takes him from the misty hills of Transylvania all the way to fog‑shrouded London, determined to end the vampire’s reign of terror. The CD version structures the adventure into seven distinct stages, each one recreating a memorable scene from the 1992 film adaptation. Along the way Harker battles Dracula in several monstrous forms and even faces Lucy Westenra, who appears as a vampiress boss. The game’s narrative stays tightly bound to the movie’s plot while delivering a cinematic, FMV‑driven experience.
