Summary
AH-3 Thunderstrike (known as Thunderhawk in other regions) drops you into a fast‑paced helicopter combat sim where you pilot a fictional AH‑73M gunship across ten global operations. Each operation bundles several missions—blasting tanks, leveling bridges, escorting convoys and the like—while you juggle a hefty arsenal of 16 heat‑seeking missiles, 76 rockets and an unlimited‑ammo machine gun. Special levels swap the rockets for a runway‑cratering system or a bomb, adding a tactical twist beyond the standard destroy‑anything‑in‑sight play. The Sega CD remix, released by JVC in ’93, became a surprise hit in Europe, earning a 7/10 from Edge, topping Mega‑CD’s all‑time list and even being dubbed the console’s best release by Next Generation. With roughly 300 000 copies sold in Europe and glowing spots in Retro Gamer’s top‑ten Mega‑CD titles, it cemented a reputation that spawned two sequels—Thunderhawk 2 and Operation Phoenix—and its engine later powered Core Design’s Shellshock.
Storyline
AH-3: ThunderStrike drops you into ten separate world regions, each modeled after a real‑world conflict or hot‑spot. The campaign map spans continents, letting you hop from the Balkans to the South China Sea. You pilot the fictional AH‑73M attack helicopter throughout these operations.
Missions range from escorting a United Nations humanitarian convoy during the Bosnian War to hunting pirates on the South China Sea. Primary goals usually involve destroying key enemy structures such as bases or bridges. Secondary targets include tanks, SAM launchers, and other tactical assets. Every sortie blends a main objective with optional side‑tasks, keeping the action varied.
