Summary
Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000 rolls onto the Sega 32X with a deceptively simple, diagonally‑scrolling battlefield that mimics the arcade feel of the original Zaxxon. The playfield itself is 2‑D, but enemy craft and the player’s ship are rendered with flat‑shaded polygons, giving a convincing faux‑3D vibe.
The ship you control is fragile – it only takes one hit and power‑ups are rare. That forces you to hunt down enemies, jump aboard their hulls and hijack their weapon systems, turning each foe into a temporary upgrade. This mechanic adds a thin layer of strategy to the otherwise straight‑forward “shoot‑everything” loop.
Because you can commandeer dozens of different vessels, the game offers a surprisingly diverse arsenal despite its minimalist visuals. I keep coming back to the tension of deciding which enemy to steal next, making each run feel fresh.
Storyline
Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000 pits you against a ruthless insectoid clan that seeks to seize control of the galaxy. Their plan is to breach the planetary defensive net and claim the ultimate power source.
Your task is to infiltrate their hidden stronghold, locate the Motherbase, and destroy it before the insects can complete their invasion. Time is limited, and every second brings the enemy closer to victory.
