Summary

The 32X version of Virtua Fighter manages to capture the core 3‑D fighting experience despite the add‑on’s hardware limits. Reviewers praised it as an "excellent conversion," noting smoother gameplay and fewer glitches than the later Saturn port, even though it suffers from occasional slowdown, reduced polygon counts, and a tinny audio mix. What really sets this version apart are the extra options: you can flip between low, high, and bird’s‑eye camera angles mid‑match, replay every bone‑jarring hit in Full Match Replay, and even tweak each fighter’s outfit. The new Tournament Mode adds a competitive edge, letting you pit the eight distinct masters against each other in a structured bracket. All told, it’s a solid, if not essential, upgrade for anyone who already owns a 32X.

Storyline

Virtua Fighter (the Sega 32X version) drops players into a post‑Shōwa world where a mysterious World Fighting Tournament draws combatants from every corner of the globe. The roster includes Japanese kung‑fu teacher Akira Yuki, Hong‑Kong film star Pai Chan and her father Lau Chan, Canadian wrestler Wolf Hawkfield, Australian fisherman Jeffry McWild, ninja Kage‑Maru, San‑Francisco student Sarah Bryant and her brother Jacky, plus the final boss Dural, a gynoid revealed to be Kage‑Maru’s missing mother.

The backstory ties the tournament to a defunct Japanese army that, after a failed attempt to reach the last Qing emperor, turned to the legendary Hakkyoku‑ken during World War II, hoping to forge supersoldiers and the ultimate martial art. Decades later, the tournament serves as a front for a sinister syndicate that continues to manipulate events behind the scenes.

Thus the game’s narrative blends historic intrigue, secret martial‑arts research, and a worldwide showdown to crown the ultimate fighter.
