Summary

Shadow Squadron (known in Japan as Stellar Assault) feels like a love‑letter to the early 90s space shooters that defined my retro‑gaming playlists. The game drops you into a semi‑open 3D arena where you can tilt your ship in any direction, lock onto enemies with a handy numeric indicator, and switch an energy shield on or off to conserve power. I’m often torn between the Feather 1—a nimble, fast craft with auto‑laser fire—and the heftier Feather 2, which lets me fire manually or hand the piloting over to an auto‑pilot while I focus on blasting foes.

The two‑player co‑op is a neat twist: one player pilots, the other mans the guns, and the radar at the bottom of the screen swivels with your ship, while a next‑target arrow points you toward the nearest enemy. Enemy models are simple flat‑shaded polygons, split into fighters and carrier ships that must be taken down to clear each mission. After a loss you get a limited pool of continues, and once you finish, a “Trace” mode replays your entire run, letting you relive those chaotic dogfights.

Even though the graphics are modest by today’s standards, the blend of maneuverable flight, dual‑ship options, and cooperative gunner play gives Shadow Squadron a distinct charm that still feels fresh when I fire up my 32X today.

Storyline

In Stellar Assault on Sega 32X (often just called Stellar Assault), you step into the boots of a newly promoted flight officer from the eponymous squadron. Armed with one of two Feather fighters, your mission is to hold the line at Outpost 51.

The alien armada sweeps in from the outer reaches, spanning several sectors, and threatens the outpost with a Sun‑powered laser cannon. Your objective is to push the invaders back, tear through their fleet, and smash the laser cannon before it can fire. Success means Outpost 51 stays safe; failure means total annihilation.
