Summary

Core Design’s original Sega CD shooter, Soul Star, dazzled players with its colorful sprite‑based graphics, smooth scaling effects and a behind‑the‑ship perspective that felt surprisingly immersive for its time. When the team hinted at Soulstar X for the 32X, the promise of upgraded visuals and extra levels made it look like the perfect showcase title for the add‑on’s capabilities. The game would have taken the pseudo‑3D, cockpit‑view formula and pushed it further, delivering sharper sprites and more detailed backgrounds that could really shine on the 32X’s higher resolution. In the original, you pilot a lone space warrior across six tranquil planets now overrun by the Myrkoid invaders, blasting through waves of enemies with blazing weapons. Unfortunately, Soulstar X never made it to market, leaving us to wonder how much the enhanced graphics and new stages would have elevated the classic’s frantic space‑combat experience.
