Summary

Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire—known in Japan as Sangokushi IV—takes the classic turn‑based strategy formula and dresses it in noticeably sharper graphics. One of the quirkiest upgrades is the ability for warships to set each other ablaze, while archers can launch flaming arrows that scorch both infantry and catapults. The game even lets you summon barbarian hordes to raid rival territories, adding a chaotic twist to the usual diplomatic dance. Alliances can be forged with other warlords, but they’re deliberately fragile, forcing you to constantly renegotiate power balances. A separate power‑up kit for the Chinese and Japanese PC releases let players fine‑tune their leaders, and that same customization was baked into the PlayStation and Saturn ports, giving those versions a deeper layer of personalization.

Storyline

Sangokushi IV (also known simply as Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV) drops you into the turbulent era of the Second Han Dynasty, where China is fragmented by powerful warlords and rival court families. As the current ruler you must restore peace, either by building a formidable military or by out‑witting opponents through negotiation.

The base game is divided into six historical scenarios: Dong Zhuo seizes control of Luoyang (AD 189), the Flying General roams the Central Plains (AD 194), Liu Bei seeks shelter in Xinye (AD 201), the Crouching Dragon soars across Red Cliffs (AD 208), the End of the Han Dynasty – Rise of the Three Kingdoms (AD 221), and a star falls at Wuzhang Plains (AD 235). Each stage lets you relive a key moment in the collapse of the Han and the birth of the Three Kingdoms.

The Power‑Up Kit adds three extra scenarios, two of which are not drawn from the novel: the villain usurps the Han’s power in a bid for unification (AD 189), three heroes vie for dominance in war‑ravaged China (AD 190), and the Rise of the Barbarian King (AD 225) expands the conflict beyond the traditional storyline.
