Summary
Kolibri drops you into a vibrant, side‑scrolling shooter where you pilot a tiny hummingbird through 19 lush, natural stages. Each level can be tackled in several ways – clear every enemy, solve its built‑in puzzles, or simply explore at will. The game’s arsenal feels wild: power‑ups turn the hummingbird’s tiny beak into a spread‑shot or a homing missile, and the puzzle requirements stiffen as you progress.
The concept originated from producer Ed Annunziata’s chance encounter with a hummingbird hovering in front of his face, sparking a research binge that birthed this unlikely hero. Novotrade International (today known as Appaloosa) wrapped the idea into a title that pushes the 32X’s capabilities, delivering sharp visuals that many reviewers praised.
Critical reaction was split. Visual flair and the original premise earned praise, but reviewers bemoaned monotonous action, fragile restart positions, under‑whelming upgrades, and clunky controls. Scores hovered around the 70‑80 % range, with some magazines noting it felt more like a Genesis showcase than a true 32X showcase. In a tongue‑in‑cheek nod, Penny Arcade crowned Kolibri the "Best Hummingbird‑based Shooter Available For The 32X" in their satire awards.
Storyline
Deep beneath the Earth's crust lies an ancient crystal of extraterrestrial origin that once pulsed with life‑giving energy, shaping the planet's ecosystems. Centuries later a twin crystal, toxic and corrupt, crashes to the surface, draining the original's power and threatening extinction. The dying crystal transfers its remaining essence to a lone hummingbird, simply called Kolibri, a name that means "hummingbird" across many European languages. Armed with this alien power, Kolibri becomes the planet's only hope.
From the shadows of the polluted world, Kolibri must confront the invasive mutation spawned by the rogue crystal, battling its malignant forms across varied environments. Each encounter tests the bird's newfound abilities, forcing it to restore balance piece by piece. The struggle is not just for survival but for the very soul of Earth, as the hummingbird fights to rekindle the original crystal's harmony. Only by overcoming the twin's corruption can the world be saved, though the cost of such a victory remains uncertain.
