Summary
Cosmic Carnage lands on the 32X as a gritty, Mortal‑Kombat‑style fighter that leans heavily into over‑the‑top armor customization. Each of the eight combatants can be fitted with light or heavy gear on the body, arms and legs, and the choice actually changes their special move set – a rare level of personalization for a mid‑90s arcade‑type title. The camera behaves like a Samurai Shodown zoom, pulling back for wide‑shot action and snapping in when fighters trade blows, which adds a surprising visual punch to the otherwise blocky 32X graphics.
The roster reads like a sci‑fi menagerie: a red‑ant alien named Cylic, a fire‑headed soldier Zena‑Lan, a shadowy figure Naruto, a samurai‑clad metal man Tyr, the skull‑faced Talmac, a robot‑like gorilla Yug, the cobra‑tailed siren Naja, and the talon‑armed Deamon. Four of them wear armor, while the others fight bare, and hidden characters can be unlocked via cheat codes. The game’s ending hinges on speed – the faster you clear opponents, the more time you have to escape in a life pod, rewarding quick, decisive play.
Development was a scramble: originally a Mega Drive project, it was shifted to the 32X at the last minute, with kits arriving just three months before launch. Sega’s own executives admitted they were reluctant to ship it, but the title still made the North American launch lineup in November 1994, later appearing in Japan as Cyber Brawl and in Europe the following February.
Storyline
In the 32X shooter Cosmic Carnage, a band of prisoners bound for a distant space mine seize control of their transport ship, only to cripple its systems during the breakout. After drifting for days in an uncharted star system, the survivors realize they must hijack another vessel and use a fake distress signal to lure a military ship. They execute a risky ramming maneuver, crashing their craft into the target and causing massive damage to both ships. The collision destroys all but one escape pod and leaves only four crew members alive on each vessel, eight survivors in total. Those remaining scramble for the lone pod, fighting for a final chance to escape the wreckage.
