Summary
Vandal Hearts II expands the tactical RPG arena with a three‑map layout: an overworld, town screens, and battle maps.
Dots on the overworld mark revisitable battles or towns that you can click into, while town screens are static snapshots offering basic options like a tavern or shop.
When you step onto a battle map the real turn‑based combat begins.
The game boasts over 120 weapon and armor combos, letting you turn a fighter into a healer on the fly without penalty.
Armor determines HP, MP, speed and defence; weapons grant skill points that must be earned to unlock abilities.
Its Dual‑Turn System, an Active‑Time Battle hybrid, allows player and enemy to move one unit at a time simultaneously, making encounters quick and mentally demanding.
Reviewers gave it respectable scores—Famitsu 32/40 and solid GameRankings ratings—praising the deep strategy but criticizing a forgettable story and occasionally stiff controls.
Fans of the first title were split, appreciating the fresh challenge of simultaneous turns while missing the original’s simpler, set‑class battles.
Storyline
Vandal Hearts II unfolds in the war‑torn kingdom of Natra, tracking Joshua from his childhood in the northern village of Polata to his adult role as a mercenary leader. The story is split into childhood and adulthood chapters, and player dialogue choices create four distinct endings and several variations.
As a boy, Joshua lives with adoptive sister Rosaly, friends Clive, Yuri and noble Adele while Prince Nicola, the lost son of the former king, arrives seeking allies. Queen Mother Agatha and Cardinal Ladorak rule with the Blood Knights; the diviner Godard twists events, forcing Joshua to kill the deranged Kossimo and flee after Adele orders his arrest.
In adulthood Joshua joins the White Dragons alongside Vlad and Pike, rescues the broken Prince Franz and uncovers the fanatical Kudur Cult led by Godard. After a series of betrayals, the party assaults Nirvadia, destroys the Life Tree and kills Godard; depending on side‑quests Joshua may become premier, wandering adventurer, mayor or tyrant, and a hidden scene shows him returning the Vandal Hearts sword to its resting place.
