Summary

Vampire Hunter D on PlayStation offers a niche survival‑horror experience focused on vampires, joining the handful of titles like Countdown Vampires that go that route. The visuals combine fully polygonal characters with pre‑rendered backgrounds, echoing early Resident Evil and 3D Castlevania titles.

Players control the enigmatic D, toggling between a sword‑drawn “battle mode” and a sheathed “search mode”. The lock‑on system, dash attacks, blocks and three‑direction dodges give combat a tactical edge, while the Left Hand meter lets you absorb weakened foes to unleash magic or even earn an extra life.

Inventory management is classic: keys, maps, wooden darts, flashbangs and grenades clutter a scrolling menu, and you’ll juggle health (HP) and vampire power (VP) meters. Blood pills boost both meters, whereas potions raise HP at the cost of VP.

The game rewards exploration with three possible endings and offers easy, normal and hard difficulties that adjust starting items and enemy toughness.

Storyline

Vampire Hunter D on PlayStation follows the Dhampir hunter D as he is hired by an elderly man named Elbourne to rescue his daughter Charlotte, who has been taken by the vampire Meier Link. The contract stipulates that if Charlotte has already turned into a vampiress, D must put her down humanely. Elbourne’s son also brings in the human vampire‑hunting squad known as the Marcus Brothers to act as backup.

The game streamlines the film’s plot, confining most of the action to Camila’s castle. Only two of the Barbarois mutants, Benge and Mashira, appear as enemies, while Caroline is omitted. From the Marcus Brothers, Borgoff and Leila receive notable screen time, with Leila even becoming a playable character; Kyle, Nolt, and Grove appear briefly in cut‑scenes before being found dead.

Players can reach three different endings based on their choices, one of which mirrors the conclusion of the Bloodlust movie.
