Summary

Vagrant Story feels like stepping into a living, breathing puzzle box. You control Ashley Riot, a Riskbreaker assassin, from a third‑person view that you can flip into a 360° first‑person perspective at any time, letting you scout the dark catacombs of Leá Monde with a simple press of START. Combat pauses for a moment, then a glowing sphere appears around Ashley; you target specific body parts, chain attacks like a rhythm game, and watch a Risk meter rise, trading accuracy for the chance of a critical hit. There are no shops or NPC allies—your only progression comes from the deep weapon‑crafting workshop where you mash together materials, affinities and damage types (blunt, piercing, edged) to forge gear that can even inherit new properties. Block‑puzzle rooms pepper the dungeons, and after you solve them once a timed "Evolve, or Die!!" challenge kicks in, rewarding speed‑run rankings. The game also hides a New Game+ mode that hands over your end‑game arsenal for a hidden, tougher level. Behind the scenes, a team of up to fifty Square artists, led by Yasumi Matsuno and Akihiko Yoshida, painstakingly modeled every character for seamless cutscenes, while Hitoshi Sakimoto’s score swells through every corridor. It even earned a flawless 40‑point review from Famitsu, a rare honor for any PlayStation title.

Storyline

Vagrant Story is set in Ivalice, focusing on the ruined island city of Leá Monde while the kingdom of Valendia is in civil war. Leá Monde is over two thousand years old, perched on an island surrounded by reefs, its massive walls described as stronger than Valendia’s forts. An earthquake 25 years earlier shattered the city, leaving unstable ground, the Grand Cathedral and Temple of Kiltia at its heart, flanked by east and west districts and towering city walls.

The story follows Ashley Riot, a male Riskbreaker of the Valendia Knights of the Peace, who is sent with his partner Callo Merlose to investigate a cult leader, Sydney Losstarot, after the Duke Bardorba’s manor is besieged. In the prologue, known as the Graylands Incident, Ashley is blamed for the duke’s murder and must clear his name while chasing Sydney, who has kidnapped the duke’s son Joshua.

Ashley infiltrates Leá Monde through underground wine cellars, confronting the Crimson Blades led by Romeo Guildenstern, the cult Müllenkamp, and the mysterious Dark powers that animate the city’s undead. He learns that the city itself is a “Gran Grimoire” and that the Grand Cathedral houses the source of its magic. Allies such as Rosencrantz reveal that Ashley’s memories of a wife and son were false, manipulated by the VKP to bind him to the Riskbreakers.

The climax occurs in the Grand Cathedral where Sydney attempts to transfer the Dark’s “key” to Ashley. After a battle that kills Rosencrantz and later Guildenstern, Ashley escapes the collapsing city with the key, while Callo, Hardin and Joshua flee. The epilogue shows Ashley visiting the ailing Duke Bardorba, only to learn that Sydney had already chosen Ashley as the heir of Darkness before the duke killed the cult leader.
