Summary
Twisted Metal 4 rolls back onto the PlayStation only in North America, launching in November 1999 and earning a spot in the Sony Greatest Hits line‑up a year later. As the fourth entry and the final one crafted by 989 Studios, it refines the demolition‑derby premise with smoother gameplay, softer physics and an arsenal of exclusive weapons that feel more responsive than the previous title.
The game pits thirteen selectable drivers against each other in arena battles where the last vehicle standing claims victory, with each stage presenting its own boss—two on the Oil Rig—to defeat before progressing. Notably, Rob Zombie appears as a character, reflecting the heavy‑metal‑and‑hip‑hop‑laden soundtrack that many critics praised, while defeated bosses unlockable after completing story mode expand the roster. Despite these improvements, sales topped out around 465 k units and reviewers gave a mixed‑positive consensus, citing level design as a high point but noting touchy physics and graphics sharpness as drawbacks.
Storyline
Twisted Metal 4 follows the chaotic rise of Sweet Tooth, the series’ iconic ice‑cream truck driver. The intro traces the tournament back to the early 1900s, when a traveling circus‑like caravan spread destruction across the country and a young Sweet Tooth became fascinated by the spectacle. He enters the competition, wins, and wishes to become the star of Twisted Metal, a request Calypso gladly fulfills.
Years later, Sweet Tooth grows jealous of Calypso, the mysterious organizer who grants wishes, and orchestrates a coup with the help of a gang of tiny clowns. He seizes Calypso’s power ring—a relic that devours the souls of the dead, granting eternal youth and wish‑granting ability—and assumes the role of wish‑maker himself. Now he cheats contestants with twisted wishes just as his predecessor did, cementing his reign over the Twisted Metal tournament.
