Summary
Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return spins its platforming on a semi‑linear 3D world where Tomba rides predetermined tracks until a flashing arrow prompts a direction change, and occasional areas switch to a free‑roam top‑down view. You attack by leaping onto foes and biting their backs, building a magic meter, then fling them away, while weapons like flails and boomerangs add extra punch.
The game crams 137 optional events—from retrieving a fishing hook to helping Santa locate his sack—each rewarding Adventure Points that unlock marked treasure chests. Scattered magical feathers let you teleport anywhere you’ve already visited, and a wardrobe of suits unlocks new abilities, such as the flying‑squirrel outfit for gliding or the pig suit for talking to friendly swine.
Critics praised the diverse gameplay, crisp controls and colorful visuals, though the audio and repetitive boss fights drew lukewarm notes. Despite positive press, sales lagged and Whoopee Camp dissolved shortly after launch. The sequel later resurfaced on the PlayStation Network in Japan (2011), Europe (2012) and North America (2015), finally offering the English version after a long wait.
Storyline
Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return (often just called Tomba! 2) begins when the feral hero receives a frantic letter from his insect friend Zip Zip that Tabby has vanished. He dives into the sea, reaches a fishing village, meets the old sailor Kainen, and heads for the Coal‑Mining Town where Tabby’s house stands. Gran tells him the missing trolley passenger was snatched by the Evil Pigs, who also cursed the continent, and gives Tomba a red Pig Bag to trap the Flame Pig that set the mines ablaze.
With the first bag, Tomba journeys to the Kujara Ranch, Donglin Forest, Circus Town and the Water Temple, capturing the Ice, Ghost, Earth and Water Pigs to end snowfall, gloom, pig‑transformation and endless rain. Each capture restores its region and adds another Pig Bag to his collection. When all five are sealed, the Last Evil Pig appears in a hidden cavern beneath the Coal‑Mining Town, freezes time, and forces a final battle. Tomba defeats the boss, rescues Tabby, escapes on the flying dog Baron, enjoys a feast, receives a tuxedo from Kainen for 100% completion, then pilots a new wind‑mill boat home—only to crash on the maiden voyage.
