Summary

Threads of Fate (known in Japan as Dewprism) drops you into a bright 3D world where you alternate between two very different heroes, Rue and Mint. Each character brings a distinct play‑style: Rue can absorb defeated monsters and temporarily become them, while Mint wields dual rings that double as melee tools and spell‑casting conduits.

The game revolves around the hub town of Carona, which serves as a shop, hostel, and chapel, and a series of unlockable dungeons accessed as the story progresses. Combat is real‑time, with health and magic points growing through use rather than experience points, and a fixed overhead camera that can be tweaked in certain areas. Unique puzzles are tied to each protagonist’s abilities, and a New Game+ mode carries over unlocked powers while opening secret zones.

Development began in 1998 under director Koji Sugimoto, who deliberately aimed for a light‑hearted adventure to balance his work on the darker Xenogears. The team pushed the PlayStation to render a fully 3D environment without pre‑rendered cut‑scenes, a technical hurdle at the time. Daisuke Watanabe penned the script, Makoto Shimamoto designed the world, and Junya Nakano supplied the soundtrack.

Critics praised the combat’s simplicity and the crisp 3D visuals, though the title fell short commercially, moving just over 111,000 units in Japan. It later resurfaced on PlayStation Network and earned a cult following among Square fans, even inspiring a cameo outfit in a 2016 Square Enix mobile crossover.

Storyline

Threads of Fate follows two very different heroes: the amnesiac Rue and the selfish princess Mint of the East Heaven Kingdom. Rue witnesses his caretaker Claire slain by an armored man and swears to bring her back. Mint is stripped of her throne by her sister Maya and vows to reclaim power and dominate the world.
Both characters chase the legendary Dewprism, a relic left by the magical Aeon people that can grant any wish. The relic was forged by the Aeon Valen to reshape the universe, but its creation destroyed him and the artifact was sealed by the East Heaven Kingdom. Doll Master also hunts the Dewprism, hoping to resurrect Valen and finish his mission. It is later revealed that Rue and Doll Master are artificial “Dolls” built to serve Valen.
In Rue’s campaign he defeats Doll Master, confronts Valen in his fortress and stops the god‑like being from using a restored Claire as a vessel. Valen then tries to possess Rue, but Claire’s spirit blocks him, leading Rue to kill Valen and revive Claire. The Dewprism shatters when Valen merges with it in a final desperate act.
Mint’s route sees her allied with Maya after Doll Master overtakes the kingdom, and the sisters reconcile while battling the Doll Master together. They later defeat Valen after he briefly possesses Rue, and the Dewprism is likewise destroyed. Completing both stories unlocks an ending where Rue adopts another of Valen’s Dolls and Mint convinces him to continue searching for Aeon artifacts.
