Summary
I still get a thrill watching Rue and Mint tackle the same townsquare from totally opposite angles in Threads of Fate. Rue can siphon coins from fallen monsters and literally become them, while Mint swings two rings and mixes elemental spells for ranged and melee attacks, meaning each playthrough feels like a brand‑new puzzle. The fixed‑overhead camera lets the 3D environments of Carona and its adjoining dungeons feel roomy without overwhelming the PlayStation’s hardware, and the hub town doubles as a shop, hostel, and even a chapel where donations subtly shift world elements.
The combat grows with you – HP climbs every time you take damage and MP rises as you cast spells – so you literally learn by fighting. After beating the first campaign a New Game + carries over your hard‑won abilities, opening secret corridors that even seasoned fans missed. The North American launch in 2000 paired the game with a demo bundled in early copies of Vagrant Story, part of Square’s “Summer of Adventure” push, and the title resurfaced on PSN in 2011, giving a new generation a chance to try its quirky dual‑hero formula.
Storyline
Threads of Fate follows an amnesiac wanderer named Rue and a self‑absorbed princess called Mint. After Rue watches his caretaker Claire slain by an armored figure, he chases the legendary Dewprism hoping to bring her back. Mint, exiled by her sister Maya, seeks the same relic to claim the East Heaven throne and dominate the world.
The Dewprism is a relic left by the ancient Aeon civilization; it can grant any wish. Both protagonists repeatedly clash with the enigmatic Doll Master, who also wants the artifact to resurrect his creator Valen. Along the way Rue and Mint are forced to cooperate while exploring Aeon ruins and learning that they themselves are artificial “Dolls” designed to serve Valen.
In Rue’s route he defeats the Doll Master, battles Valen, and uses Claire’s lingering spirit to block Valen’s possession, ultimately killing the god‑like foe and reviving Claire. Mint’s path sees her ally with Maya, defeat the Doll Master, and together with Rue stop Valen after he merges with the Dewprism, which is shattered. After completing both stories Rue adopts another of Valen’s Dolls and Mint convinces him to continue hunting Aeon artifacts.
