Summary
Tales of Destiny II (known in Japan as Tales of Eternia) brought the series’ signature action‑focused combat to the PlayStation with its Linear Motion Battle System. Players could assign combos and spells to the face buttons and even switch control among party members in the midst of real‑time fights. The game broke new ground for the series by allowing saves anywhere, and it introduced a cooking mechanic where you could learn recipes to whip up status‑boosting meals. Development was handled by members of Telnet Japan’s Wolfteam, the same team behind Tales of Phantasia and the original Tales of Destiny, while character art came from Mutsumi Inomata and cutscenes were animated by Production I.G. A limited Japanese edition bundled figurines, an art book and even a clock shaped like the mascot Quickie, with Sofmap pre‑order customers receiving an alarm clock. Critics gave it a 33/40 in Weekly Famitsu, earning the Gold Award, and it moved over 873,000 units worldwide, cementing its place as a celebrated action‑RPG of its era.
Storyline
Tales of Destiny II (often called Tales of Destiny 2) follows 18‑year‑old hunter Reid Hershel as he races to stop the Grand Fall, a looming collision of the twin worlds Inferia and Celestia. The two planets have faced each other for centuries, separated by the Orbus Barrier, but an unknown force is weakening the barrier and threatens to reunite them, reviving the ancient Aurora War.
Reid is joined by farmhand and martial artist Farah Oersted, the curious Craymal Mage Keele Zeibel, and Meredy, a cheerful Craymal Mage from Celestia who speaks Melnics and travels with her pet Quickie. They also encounter Chat, a young pirate‑descendant wielding a tool‑filled handbag, Max the resistance leader with high‑powered energy cannons, and the enigmatic swordsman Rassius “Ras” Luine who pretends to be a merchant.
The party journeys across both Inferia and Celestia, confronting lingering mistrust from the Aurora War while hunting the hidden culprits behind the barrier’s decay. Their goal is to repair the Orbus Barrier and prevent the catastrophic merger that would destroy both worlds.
