Summary

Syphon Filter 3 swaps the series’s signature sneaking for a more break‑neck, third‑person shooter feel. I loved how the camera rotates freely, letting me lock onto enemies and juggle a toolbox that suddenly includes an X‑ray gun, explosive shotgun rounds and a Steyr AUG fitted with an infrared scope that literally lets you see through walls. The returning classics—grenade launcher, night‑vision rifle and taser—mix with gadgets like proximity mines, a mine detector and a heartbeat sensor, so each encounter feels like a tactical puzzle.

The single‑player trek is peppered with bite‑size side challenges built on the same SyphonScript engine, from dodge‑the‑pursuers evasion runs to timed demolition missions that keep the pacing brisk. Multiplayer got a serious upgrade too: more than ten maps, many ripped straight from campaign levels, plus classic arenas, and new tactical tools such as sniper posts and gas grenades. A roster of playable characters means the two‑player mode stays fresh even after dozens of rounds.

The original cover—showing a courtroom scene with a U.S. flag—was pulled after the September‑11 anthrax scare and replaced with a simpler face‑off, a piece of history that even the retro crowd notices. A 2023 remaster finally brought this last PS‑first title to PS4 and PS5, giving the fast‑action formula a chance to shine on modern hardware.

Storyline

Syphon Filter 3 opens with Gabriel Logan, Lian Xing and Lawrence Mujari testifying before a congressional hearing chaired by Secretary of State Vince Hadden, who is secretly plotting to scapegoat Logan. The flashbacks reveal Logan’s mission in Tokyo to stop General Shi‑Hao’s interrogation, a doomed Costa‑Rica raid where he chased Erich Rhoemer onto a plane, and Mujari’s 1984 South African operation that uncovered a deadly plague linked to the Syphon Filter virus.

Xing recounts her 1987 Afghan assignment as an MSS agent and her later infiltration of Rhoemer’s lab, where she rescued scientists and secured virus samples. Logan and MI‑6 operative Maggie Powers then sabotage a shipment of the virus on the S.S. Lorelei in Dublin, fighting IRA gunmen and a double‑agent before the ship is sunk.

Back in Washington, Teresa Lipan reappears—her death was faked—to expose Hadden’s collusion with Mara Aramov. Logan battles Aramov’s forces, disarms bombs, and finally confronts her on a Metro train, wounding her before she escapes. The game ends with Logan becoming head of the Agency while a post‑credit scene hints that Aramov has recovered more virus cargo, setting up future threats.
