Summary
When Syphon 2 finally landed on PlayStation Plus in 2022, it came with trophy support and both 50 Hz and 60 Hz modes, making the classic feel fresh for modern consoles. The developers went in with a full script already written, letting them layer in a worldwide espionage trail that introduced fresh locales and a surprisingly diverse cast—from the Native‑American Teresa Lipan to African‑American Lawrence Mujari and Chinese operative Lian Xing. Multiplayer also got a makeover, letting you pit characters—including a few who died in the first game—against each other on brand‑new maps.
Critics largely praised the tight gunplay, challenging difficulty, and razor‑sharp graphics, with GameRevolution calling it a "no‑brainer" for fans. However, the voice‑acting drew consistent flak for flat delivery and off‑key accents. The title still proved popular, shipping 1.32 million units and earning a platinum badge, cementing its spot as one of the PlayStation’s lasting action highlights.
Storyline
In Syphon Filter 2, hours after the first game, Gabriel Logan and Lian Xing are branded terrorists by the Agency after exposing its link to the Syphon Filter virus. Dillon Morgan captures Lian at a PharCom warehouse, forcing Gabe and CBDC Lieutenant Jason Chance to meet operative Teresa Lipan in Arizona. The Agency scrambles F‑22 Raptors over the Colorado Rockies while Gabe and Chance search the mountain for their downed transport and a box of PharCom data disks, pursued by operative Steven Archer.
Lian awakens at a U.S. Air Force base where Morgan, Derek Falkan and Thomas Holman work with Dr. Elsa Weissinger to harvest infected plasma from test subjects, including PharCom CEO Jonathan Phagan. Morgan cuts Phagan’s life support to hide the infection. After killing Falkan, Lian escapes in a helicopter, joins Gabe, and together they defeat Archer’s forces and recover the PharCom data.
The decrypted disks show a missing half held by Russian SVR director Uri Gregorov. Lian meets Gregorov in Moscow, but he is an impostor for Mara Aramov; the real director is imprisoned in Aljir Gulag, where Lian was once held. After stopping the impostor’s execution, Lian collapses from the virus and Gabe brings her back to the United States.
