Summary

Suikoden is a Japanese‑style RPG that mixes classic turn‑based party combat with two extra battle modes. Up to six characters fight together, each placed in front or back rows that affect short, medium, long range attacks.

The game also throws in one‑on‑one duels that work like rock‑paper‑scissors (attack‑defend‑special) and large‑scale war battles where charge, bow and magic units counter each other in a similar loop. Hints are given so you can read the opponent’s intent.

A hallmark is the 107‑person recruitment system; many recruits are only needed for story events or to unlock special items, and some appear only after reaching certain levels or finding hidden items. Weapons are unique per character and must be sharpened at blacksmiths, while armor and items are bought normally.

Magic comes from runes that grant limited spell uses; each rune ties to a spell level and can also provide combat tricks like double damage at the cost of defense. Experience is shared so low‑level characters level faster, keeping the whole party useful.

Developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo, Suikoden’s soundtrack was crafted by a team including Miki Higashino, giving the game a memorable musical backdrop.

Storyline

Loosely based on the classic Chinese novel *Water Margin*, Suikoden is a fantasy RPG that centers on the political struggle of the Scarlet Moon Empire. The player controls the son of General Theo McDohl, a young man who begins his career in the Imperial Army under the watch of family friends like Ted, Cleo, Pahn and Gremio. As he witnesses the Empire’s corruption, he learns that the land of Toran is enslaved and war‑torn. The hero eventually discovers the Rune of Life and Death, one of the 27 True Runes that power the world.

After fleeing the capital Gregminster with the aid of the mysterious Viktor, the hero is drawn into the Liberation Army, a rebellion led by Odessa Silverberg. When Imperial forces sack the hideout and kill Odessa, the hero—known as Tir in official material—takes command with the reluctant support of members such as Flik. He recruits Odessa’s brother, former imperial strategist Mathiu, and secures an abandoned castle as the rebels’ headquarters.

The core quest is to gather the 108 Stars of Destiny, a roster of over ninety characters usable in combat and many more who can aid or hinder the cause. By uniting rebel factions and growing the army, the Liberation Army aims to overthrow the corrupt Scarlet Moon Empire and restore peace to the war‑ravaged land.
