Storyline

Suikoden II is set three years after the original, amid a war between Jowston’s City‑States and the Kingdom of Highland. The story follows Riou Genkaku, his friend Jowy Atreides, and their adopted sister Nanami. Both receive a half of the Rune of the Beginning, a True Rune that governs conflict, binding their fates.

At the start the two serve in Highland’s Unicorn Youth Brigade. Prince Luca Blight stages a false‑flag massacre, forcing them to flee into a river where Viktor’s mercenaries rescue Riou and a shrine grants each a rune half – Bright Shield and Black Sword. Captured and sentenced to death by Highland, they are saved again by Viktor’s group and escape to Muse.

In Muse Riou begins recruiting the 108 Stars of Destiny, including Shu, Apple, and former allies Viktor and Flik. The New State Army allies with Two River, the Toran Republic, and other city‑states, while Gordeau of Matilda refuses to join. Together they drive the vampire Neclord from North Window and liberate Greenhill.

Luca is slain, Jowy becomes king of Highland, and Nanami is wounded. Riou battles the Beast Rune, then a final duel with Jowy can end in death, reconciliation, or an ending when all 108 Stars are recruited.
