Summary
Steel Harbinger (sometimes just called Steel Harbinger) is a PlayStation shooter that combines an overhead 3/4 viewpoint with full‑motion video cutscenes. You control Miranda Bowen, a human‑alien hybrid whose health can be restored by consuming the corpses of defeated enemies— a mechanic that stood out to reviewers. The game lets you wield everything from pistols and M16s to rocket launchers and futuristic energy rifles, and even a Canadian‑made Icarus beam. Its level design features disappearing walls that give the sense of a shifting 3‑D space, while the central mission revolves around activating a satellite to fend off alien tentacle pods. Critics praised its bizarre protagonist and the sheer size of its stages; scores hovered around 7‑plus out of 10. Some noted imprecise jumping and interruptive FMV, but most agreed it was a memorable, if flawed, action‑packed experience.
Storyline
In 2069 North America is torn apart by a three‑way war, with Canada and Mexico fighting the United States. During the chaos alien pods crash onto the continent, sprouting metallic tentacles that instantly mutate humans and animals into half‑organic, half‑machine monsters. Dr. Bowen, a scientist, examines one of the pods, but it breaks free and attacks his daughter, Miranda Bowen, played by Wendi Kenya. Although her father severs the tentacle, Miranda is already infected and transforms into the Steel Harbinger, humanity’s final hope.
As Steel Harbinger, Miranda battles across a devastated United States, traveling from Kansas to Las Vegas, then San Francisco, Houston, Cape Canaveral, and Washington. She even ventures to the Antarctic, an alien planetoid, and finally the Moon, confronting the alien infestation at every stop. Along the way she discovers special weapons capable of destroying the biomechanical foes, and she can consume the slain enemies to restore her strength.
Each level pits her against relentless tentacled enemies, forcing her to balance brutal combat with the desperate need to save the planet. The game’s grim sci‑fi narrative and relentless action make Steel Harbinger a memorable retro shooter.
