Summary

Star Wars: Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire (often just Rebel Assault II) drops you into a rail‑shooter packed with original live‑action footage. The PlayStation version upgraded the PC’s digitized sprites to fully polygonal ships, delivering sharper FMV and the classic John Williams score with authentic Skywalker Sound effects. You pilot a mix of X‑wings, B‑wings, Y‑wings, a Millennium Falcon and speeder bikes across fifteen land, air and space missions, facing stormtroopers, TIE fighters, a Super Star Destroyer and the newly introduced cloaking TIE Phantom.

The game runs on LucasArts’ INSANE engine, offering both cockpit‑view first‑person and third‑person ship control, plus on‑foot sections where you can take cover or lean out to fire. Four skill levels let newcomers and veterans alike find a challenge, while a passcode system saves progress. I love how the blend of FMV cinema and arcade‑style aiming feels like stepping onto a retro Star Wars set, making each play‑through a vivid, high‑energy throwback.

Storyline

The story opens in the Dreighton Nebula, where Rookie One flies with a Rebel scouting patrol investigating a series of vanished Rebel craft. Legends say early hyperspace travelers were lost in the nebula’s eddies, and even two Clone‑Wars fleets were swallowed whole.
Rookie One receives a distress call from the YT‑1300 Corellia Star under attack by TIE fighters; his wingman is killed and his own X‑wing is shot down. He ejects, crash‑lands on Dreighton, battles stormtroopers at an Imperial station, rescues the transport and its data, then escapes through mining tunnels and jumps to hyperspace.
Admiral Ackbar reveals the Empire’s secret mining operation in the Arah asteroid belt, producing the cloaked V38 “Phantom” TIEs. Rookie leads X‑wings to destroy the reactor, later infiltrates Imdaar Alpha, steals a Phantom, and helps blow up Admiral Sarn’s Super Star Destroyer Terror. Vader kills Sarn, the cloaked facility is destroyed, and the Rebels celebrate another victory.
