Summary
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace lands on the original PlayStation as a crunchy, 3‑D adventure that tries to mirror the movie’s blockbuster moments. I still recall the thrill of slipping into Obi‑Wan’s cloak or firing blasters as Qui‑Gon, each character bringing a unique weapon—lightsabers, force pushes, missile launchers, or diplomatic trade options.
The game was among the first 3‑D Star Wars titles to let players duel with lightsabers, adding timing‑based strikes and parries against Darth Maul and waves of droid infantry. Enemies range from hulking AAT walkers to snarling Tusken Raiders, keeping every corridor feeling dangerous.
After its original 1999 launch, the title resurfaced on PlayStation 4 and 5 through the PlayStation Plus Classics catalogue in January 2024, giving a new generation a taste of its nostalgic quirks. Reviewers loved the variety but warned about wonky camera angles and hammy voice acting; nonetheless it earned a Gold sales award in the UK for moving over 200,000 units.
Storyline
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace on PlayStation follows the film’s storyline but adds scenes that the movie never shows, such as Queen Amidala and Captain Panaka’s journey through Coruscant during Anakin’s Jedi Temple interview. The narrative centers on Jedi Master Qui‑Gon Jinn and his padawan Obi‑Wan Kenobi, and includes boss battles against a Tusken Raider chieftain, Jabba’s Pit Beast, and Sith Lord Darth Maul.
The Trade Federation’s blockade of Naboo prompts Chancellor Valorum to dispatch the Jedi duo. After a poisoned‑gas ambush aboard the Viceroy’s ship, they fight through battle droids and escape to the planet’s swamps.
Obi‑Wan encounters Jar Jar Binks, rescues him from imprisonment, and negotiates with Gungan leader Boss Nass. He then escorts Queen Amidala and Captain Panaka through the Gardens of Theed before the group flees to Tatooine.
On Mos Espa, Qui‑Gon discovers child slave Anakin Skywalker, wins his freedom by killing a Jabba beast and beating Watto at a pod race. A mysterious Sith, Darth Maul, attacks; the final duel ends with Qui‑Gon’s death, Obi‑Wan’s victory, and a promise to train Anakin, concluding with a celebration on Naboo.
