Summary
Star Wars: Demolition dropped on the PlayStation in late 2000 and immediately felt like a mash‑up of the classic Vigilante 8 engine with the Star Wars grit you expect from LucasArts. The Empire bans Jabba’s podraces, so the slug‑riddled gangster cooks up a no‑holds‑barred vehicle battle where you must be the last craft alive. Power‑up items litter the eight stages – thermal detonators, concussion missiles, proton torpedoes, extra shielding, cloaking bursts and fire‑rate boosts – giving each of the 13 combatants a chance to turn the tide.
The game offers a Tournament trek with escalating challenges, a free‑for‑all Battle mode, the risk‑laden High Stakes betting round, and a three‑minute Hunt‑a‑Droid scramble against roaming probe droids; all can be played solo or with a friend. Critics praised its faithful Vigilante roots and the fun, bite‑size thrills, though most noted the excitement wears thin after a few rounds. Still, the blend of familiar combat mechanics and Star Wars flair makes Demolition a quirky nostalgic bite for retro racers.
Storyline
The galaxy is locked in a brutal civil war, but the Outer Rim desert world of Tatooine remains a hotbed of crime under Jabba the Hutt. Jabba’s empire of gambling, smuggling and other shady deals keeps flourishing despite the chaos. When the Empire bans the popular sport of podracing, the Hutt sees a new profit opportunity.
He launches an underground death‑match where combatants battle in or on vehicles, drawing high‑stakes gamblers from across the galaxy. Rivals include bounty hunter Boba Fett, who relies solely on his jetpack for mobility. Another familiar face is Aurra Sing, who storms the arena on a sleek swoop bike. Other entrants pilot tanks, landspeeders and even a massive rancor, turning the contest into a chaotic vehicular melee.
The deadly tournament becomes the centerpiece of Jabba’s illegal empire, offering gamblers blood‑sport thrills while the Empire watches uneasily. Players must out‑drive, out‑shoot and out‑survive a relentless roster of opponents to claim the ultimate prize.
