Summary
Star Ocean: The Second Story broke new ground as the first entry in its franchise to reach North America, landing on the PlayStation in June 1999. Tri‑Ace’s development paired Enix’s publishing muscle with a blend of real‑time combat and skill‑based progression that felt fresh amid the era’s turn‑based stalwarts, drawing casual comparisons to Final Fantasy VII’s cinematic style. Critics praised its innovative systems and lush sci‑fi world, earning a loyal cult following that still tags it the series’ best‑held title. The game’s legacy extended beyond games‑core media, spawning manga and anime adaptations, and prompting a 2015 remaster, Star Ocean: Second Evolution, for newer PlayStation hardware—with upgraded visuals, a fresh soundtrack, and DLC, though Square Enix kept that version Japan‑exclusive.
Storyline
Star Ocean: The Second Story takes place in S.D. 366 (A.D. 2452), twenty years after the original. Claude C. Kenny, an Earth Federation Ensign and son of Ronyx J. Kenny, is sent to survey Milocinia but a mysterious device teleports him to Expel. Mistaken for the “Hero of Light” because of his Phase Gun, he meets native girl Rena Lanford and learns of the planet‑wide disaster caused by the Sorcery Globe.
Claude, Rena and recruited allies investigate the Sorcery Globe and discover the Ten Wise Men, who use the Quadratic Sphere to drive Expel toward the massive energy formation Energy Nede. Their plan is to unleash a universe‑destroying Heraldry, but a collision shatters Expel, leaving the heroes in a teleport zone where Mayor Narl reveals that defeating the Wise Men could restore the planet.
The party joins the resistance, strengthens their abilities, and assaults the Wise Men’s stronghold at Fienal. After defeating them they prevent universal annihilation. The game offers 86 different endings, each reflecting the player’s discoveries and private actions.
