Summary
SpongeBob SquarePants: SuperSponge turned the PlayStation into a sprawling Bikini Bottom theme park for anyone who ever chased a spatula. The game is split into five themed chapters—Bikini Bottom, an underwater volcano, Prehistoric Bikini Bottom, Rock Bottom, and an industrial district—each offering four levels and a boss on the fourth stage. Spatulas act as a Sonic‑style health meter; the moment you get hit you lose every collected spatula, and without any you sacrifice a life, making careful gathering of the 100‑spatula bonuses a rewarding risk. Hitting a secret spatula quota in every chapter unlocks "Six Clams Adventure Land," a Six Flags‑style amusement zone where you chase 25 flower tokens to buy party props for Patrick’s birthday. The title sold over a million copies, earned a Greatest Hits re‑release, and still holds a 68% aggregate score, making it one of the PlayStation’s best‑selling and most remembered platformers from the early 2000s.
Storyline
In SpongeBob SquarePants: SuperSponge (often just called SuperSponge), Patrick’s birthday sets the stage when SpongeBob promises him the ultimate gift: a photo signed by his idols, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. The heroes, however, are more interested in sending SpongeBob on a series of errands, so they assign him four tasks scattered across Bikini Bottom.
While completing the challenges, SpongeBob battles a roster of quirky bosses, most notably the Flying Dutchman, and collects the items the superheroes demand. After the fourth task he discovers the retirement‑home TV for Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy is broken, prompting a final quest to locate repair tools throughout the town.
With the tools in hand, SpongeBob fixes the television, finally earns the coveted autographs, and watches the TV sputter once more, provoking the heroes’ ire. The game closes with Patrick thanking SpongeBob for the signatures and everyone shouting a happy birthday.
