Summary

Spawn: The Eternal drags the gritty world of Todd McFarlane’s Spawn onto the PlayStation by swapping between two very different gameplay lenses. In an over‑the‑shoulder “Tomb‑Raider‑style” exploration mode, you climb, jump, smash crates and hunt for keys, health packs and magic Power Orbs across fifteen maze‑like stages. When you corner an enemy the camera flips to a side‑view brawler reminiscent of Street Fighter, where Spawn wields only his cape and chains, delivers punch‑kick combos, even rips off an opponent’s arm to use as a weapon. Boss fights throw familiar villains like the Violator and the Redeemer at you.

The game’s production spanned from early 1995 at Sony Interactive Studios America, with motion‑capture sessions in San Diego and constant feedback from McFarlane and his associate Terry Fitzgerald. The CD even hides a lengthy interview with the creator. Upon release, reviewers panned it as one of the worst film tie‑ins on the PS1, citing ugly, blocky graphics, slow camera, clunky controls and a jarring perspective switch. Still, the ambition of blending adventure navigation with arcade‑style fighting makes Spawn: The Eternal a peculiar relic of late‑90s experimentation.

Storyline

Spawn: The Eternal follows the recently‑killed Al Simmons, a former assassin who is murdered by an associate and then makes a deal with Malebolgia, the devil from the Eight Sphere of Hell, to be revived as part of the Devil's Own Army and return to Earth as the titular superhero. He returns as the iconic anti‑hero known as Spawn.

To free himself from this fate, Spawn must travel through three different time periods—Street, Savage, and Medieval—to reach the Tower of Hell and defeat Malebolgia. Along the way he encounters other established villains such as Overtkill, the Redeemer, Violator, Vandalizer and Vaporizer.
