Sonic Wings Special (known as Aero Fighters Special in North America) packs together the three earlier Sonic Wings installments into one vertically‑scrolling shooter. The PlayStation edition added fresh graphics, new pilots, Time Attack and a two‑player mode, plus an unlocking system where secret fighters unlock whole new teams like NATO and a hidden “Secret” squad. Each of the seven main teams has two pilots and up to two fighter variants, totalling 26 craft; finishing a run with a pilot reveals their hidden plane and new endings.

Storyline

Investigations by multiple nations reveal the organization’s goal of global chaos and a secret weapon capable of killing two‑thirds of the planet’s population.

To counter this threat, the supranational force Project Blue—officially a United Nations special‑forces unit but really a coalition of elite combat experts—launches a worldwide offensive. After Fata Morgana seizes the core of several countries’ militaries and initiates a global coup, Project Blue’s leader, Captain Lord River‑n‑White, orders a full‑scale attack, recruiting any available pilots to stop the looming catastrophe.
