Summary
Small Soldiers on the PlayStation captures the toy‑war vibe of the movie without retreading its plot. Instead of following the film’s story, the game pits the Gorgonites against an invading Commando force on their homeland of Gorgon. It’s completely separate from the unrelated Game Boy and PC versions, which makes it a distinct experience for console fans.
The PS1 title is a 3D third‑person shooter that feels a lot like classic tank‑control action. I play as Archer, a Gorgonite emissary armed with a rapid‑fire crossbow that can be upgraded with new ammo types, while Chip Hazard heads the Commando Elite with a pistol of his own. Levels are small but open, filled with keys, turrets, and drivable vehicles, and a two‑player mode lets you summon allies or flip sides. Multiplayer offers a frantic frag race to five kills or a flag‑return scramble. Game Informer gave it a 7.25/10, noting solid puzzles and challenging combat but calling out clunky invisible barriers that hamper the fun.
Storyline
Small Soldiers on PlayStation diverges from the movie and places the action in the fictional world of Gorgon. In this setting the Gorgonites are living beings from many planets, each representing a race, and they are driven by a mythic quest to find the peaceful realm of Gorgon.
The game opens with a pre‑rendered cutscene showing the Commando Elite already inside Gorgon, ready to strike. Archer, the Gorgonite leader, decides to confront the enemy directly, contrary to the film’s passive programming. Beyond these set‑piece moments the title offers only mission‑based objectives, and it concludes with a static image rather than a cinematic ending.
