Summary

Shadow Tower thrusts you into a grim, first‑person dungeon crawl that feels like a stripped‑back King’s Field. Combat is real‑time, and every monster you defeat raises a fixed stat, meaning you must hunt specific foes to shape your character instead of earning generic experience points. Weapons and armor degrade over time, so keeping gear in good condition becomes a routine part of the adventure, and the shield is an active item you actually raise to block attacks. The game discards most of the usual RPG trimmings—there’s no background music, no automap, and even the stat names can be misleading, with Strength affecting health rather than damage.

FromSoftware built the title on a tweaked version of the King’s Field engine, aiming for a Western‑inspired fantasy atmosphere that rewards patience and careful exploration. Composer Kota Hoshino contributed a soundtrack largely left unheard, its pieces later surfacing in other projects. The Japanese launch arrived on June 25 1998, and Agetec brought the game to North America in late 1999.

Critics were split; GameRankings logged a modest 49 % score, while Famitsu gave it 27 out of 40. Despite its quirks, the game has earned a cult following among fans of brutal, methodical RPGs.

Storyline

In Shadow Tower, you step into the boots of mercenary Ruus Hardy. Returning to the Holy Land of Zeptar on the continent of Eclipse, he discovers the town and its central tower ripped into an underworld, its inhabitants slain and their souls trapped by malevolent spirits. An old man hands Ruus the Dark One’s sword—the sole blade capable of harming the demons—prompting him to vow rescue of the old woman who raised him and the rest of Zeptar.

Ruus descends alone into a sprawling dungeon that spans six nature‑themed worlds, including Earth, Fire, Illusion, and Death, battling monsters and towering bosses along the way. Each realm tests his resolve as he fights to free the captured souls and restore the ruined city.

The game’s bleak atmosphere and methodical combat make the quest to reclaim Zeptar a memorable retro adventure.
