Summary

Enter the sprawling solar system known as The Regions, where seven distinct protagonists each chase their own destiny—from a wizard’s dark fate to a robot’s search for a soul. The game’s Free Scenario System lets you hop between planets, recruit allies, and tackle quests in any order, turning the world into a sandbox of inter‑regional travel. Because each hero’s story weaves into the same universe, you’ll often run into other characters, and completing one scenario makes the next start a little stronger.

Combat swaps to a turn‑based arena of 2D‑animated sprites against a rotating 3D backdrop, with weapons, magic, and combo attacks that can be learned mid‑battle. Races range from Humans and Mystics to half‑Mystic hybrids, monsters, and the mechanical Mecs, each bringing unique skills to the party. Outside fights you can seal or equip gear, spells, and abilities, shaping your strategy on the fly.

Developed by Square’s Production Team 2 under Akitoshi Kawazu, the soundtrack was crafted by longtime SaGa composer Kenji Ito. The original PlayStation release moved over a million copies, but its ambitious non‑linearity earned mixed reactions in the West, while Japanese fans voted it among the top PlayStation titles. A 2021 remaster for PS4 adds extra characters and events, giving both newcomers and veterans a fresh way to explore the frontier.

Storyline

SaGa Frontier unfolds in a sci‑fi/fantasy universe called "The Regions," a collection of worlds each with its own culture, races, technology and magic. The game’s Free Scenario System lets you hop between these regions, meet characters and engage in turn‑based battles without a fixed linear path. You can start the adventure with any of seven protagonists, each pursuing a distinct goal.

Asellus, a half‑Mystic girl rescued from a carriage accident, seeks revenge against the Mystic Lord Orlouge after her companion White Rose sacrifices herself. Blue, a fresh mage, hunts for the magical "Gift" to eventually clash with his twin brother Rouge for the sacred "Life" magic. Emilia, a former model turned secret agent, is framed for her fiancé’s murder and must clear her name while hunting the Joker. Lute, a wandering bard, becomes tangled in a conflict between General Mondo and resistance leader Captain Hamilton, uncovering his father’s tragic past.

Red, a teen whose family fell to the Black X syndicate, is granted superhero powers by Alkarl before losing them at his father’s grave. Riki, a fox‑like Lummox from Margmel, searches for the Rings of Margmel to save his dying world. T260, an ancient Mec built from junk, regains its lost memories with help from Leonard and Gen to complete a secret mission against RB3. The Remastered Edition adds Fuse, an InterRegional Police patrolman whose scenario was cut from the original release.
