Summary
Ridge Racer Revolution hit the PlayStation as the follow‑up to the original arcade‑ported classic, and it packs more depth than its predecessor. Besides the standard eleven AI opponents, the game hides two extra cars that you can unlock by clearing the Time Trial courses, and a secret “White Angel” appears on the cover art. The title also introduces a Free Run mode where you can practice without any traffic and choose the speed grade, plus an optional time‑of‑day setting that wasn’t accessible at the start. Namco kept the familiar automatic and manual transmissions but added support for the NeGcon controller and a handy rear‑view mirror for better corner spotting. The three difficulty tiers—Novice, Intermediate and Expert—each open new track sections, and completing them unlocks mirrored versions.
Multiplayer lives on the PlayStation Link cable, offering both a classic race on the original tracks and a Versus showdown with a trailing‑car handicap. Hidden minigames like Drift Contest reward precise slides, while Pretty Racer shrinks the cars into Choro‑Q style buggies. The soundtrack largely reprises Ridge Racer 2, a quick shortcut that let the eight‑month development team of more than twenty staff finish on schedule. Behind the scenes the team wrestled with high‑speed rendering, the rear‑view mirror and the link‑up mode, resulting in smoother graphics and a more immersive racing experience.
