Summary

Playing Resident Evil 3: Nemesis on the original PlayStation still feels like stepping into a city teeming with dread. The game trades the tight corridors of the earlier titles for Raccoon City’s ruined streets, where up to nine foes can swarm you at once and the new dodge and 180‑degree turn let Jill slip past a looming attack.

The standout Nemesis creature stalks you through the debris, its rocket‑launcher bursts and sudden reappearances raising the tension to “insane” levels, according to the magazines of the day. After finishing the main mission with a high score, the hidden Operation Mad Jackal Mercenaries mode unlocks, letting you control one of Jill’s allies in a time‑crunched sprint through the ruins.

Capcom’s $20 million U.S. advertising push made the game the top‑selling PlayStation title for its first two weeks, and it eventually shipped more than 3.5 million copies worldwide. Critics praised the richly detailed pre‑rendered backgrounds, improved character models and atmospheric sound design, awarding the title universal acclaim and cementing its place as a modern‑day classic in the survival‑horror canon.

Storyline

On September 28, 1998, former S.T.A.R.S. member Jill Valentine attempts to escape Raccoon City, exactly 24 hours before the events of Resident Evil 2. The city is overrun by zombies created by Umbrella’s T‑virus, and Jill fights her way toward the police department where she encounters fellow operative Brad Vickers, who is slain by the new bio‑organic weapon Nemesis‑T Type, programmed to hunt surviving S.T.A.R.S. members. Jill soon meets three Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service survivors—Carlos Oliveira, Mikhail Victor and Nikolai Zinoviev—who tell her a rescue helicopter can be summoned by ringing the Clock Tower bell. After repairing a cable car, Nikolai vanishes, Mikhail sacrifices himself with a grenade, and the car crashes into the tower’s courtyard. At the Clock Tower Jill rings the bell, draws the helicopter, but Nemesis destroys the aircraft and infects her with the T‑virus; Carlos rescues her and later finds a vaccine in a nearby Umbrella hospital, saving her life. Continuing onward, Jill defeats the Gravedigger, escapes through an abandoned Umbrella factory, learns the U.S. will launch a thermobaric missile, and finally defeats Nemesis with a prototype railgun before fleeing the city as the missile vaporizes Raccoon City.
