Summary
Puyo Puyo Box is a PlayStation collection that bundles the classic Genesis ports of the original Puyo Puyo and Puyo Puyo 2, then builds on them with plenty of extra modes. The standout is a Madō Monogatari‑style Quest where I guide Arle Nadja through battles, equipping a double‑edged sword, swapping out her Puyo Rings for raw power, and earning gold and experience proportional to chain size and speed.
A straightforward Stage Clear challenge throws ten, twenty, or even thirty foes at you, while the multiplayer suite lets up to four players mix and match rule sets from Puyo Puyo, Puyo Puyo 2, Sun or ~n, creating chaotic team or free‑for‑all battles.
Treasure Mode adds a hidden‑item hunt that later resurfaced as Excavation Mode in the 15th‑anniversary release.
This compilation also marks Compile’s final Puyo Puyo entry before the franchise fully transferred to Sega.
Storyline
In Puyo Puyo Box you step into the shoes of Arle for the RPG‑styled Quest mode, traveling through a series of challenges where she faces off against other members of the Puyo cast in classic Puyo matches. The mode lets you tweak Arle’s gear—adding a double‑edged sword effect or even stripping away the Puyo Rings to boost attack power at the cost of losing the next‑piece preview—while chains you create dictate the amount of experience and gold you earn.
Beyond the quest, the collection bundles the original Puyo Puyo and Puyo Puyo Tsu, adds a Scramble marathon of up to thirty opponents, and supports four‑player battles that can mix rulesets from Puyo Puyo, Puyo Puyo Tsu, Sun, or ~n. Team and Treasure modes (later seen as Excavation Mode in the 15th Anniversary release) round out the multiplayer experience.
